The University of Maryland (1), University of North Carolina (2), Wake Forest University (3) and University of Virginia (5) have thus far held up the strong tradition of ACC dominance in D1 NCAA field hockey by claiming 4 of the top 5 rankings for the week of 9/15/09.

NC Hockey

It’s not unusual to see three North Carolina teams ranked in the top 10 in Field Hockey. Nobody should be shocked when they look at the preseason college poll (bottom left corner) and see UNC, Wake and Duke near the top of the D1 rankings.

But high school? Now that’s a different story! Check out the current high school national rankings from yesterday. Not less than four teams from North Carolina on the front page.
Who are these girls? Well, for those of you who play a bit further north; a little color. Durham Academy, Country Day and Latin have been the cream of North Carolina hockey over the past decade. All three schools have very strong programs and battle amongst each other annually for the private school state championship. Chapel Hill High is also a perennial favorite in the public division.

The national highlight game of the week should be today as #2 Durham Academy travels south to take on #3 Country Day. It will be a battle and set the stage for early season superiority.
Want to see your team on the front page? Truth be told, I think it helped this week to….play early, play often and WIN!

See ya’ll at Festival and Disney!

Colorado field hockey off to tight start

The top teams in Colorado field hockey have started the season with a rash of close games and ties, suggesting a competitive race to the state title.

Last year's state finalists were St. Mary's Academy and Kent Denver. The defending state champs from St. Mary's have gotten off to a solid start for new coach Karen Hutchinson, winning 2-1 over Colorado Academy and 4-3 over Cheyenne Mountain. Kent has tied its only game so far, a 3-3 game with Cherry Creek, and get a rematch with St. Mary's on Sept. 23.

Creek's record so far sounds like a Father's Day gift list: tie, tie, tie. That's right, they've wound up deadlocked with Smoky Hill (0-0), Cheyenne Mountain (2-2) and Kent (3-3). Speaking of Smoky Hill, they also thrashed Eaglecrest 8-0 on Sept. 5 and will be involved in the biggest game of this weekend when they host a noon match up Saturday (Sept. 12) with St. Mary's.

Harrow Field Hockey - Spring Update

Below is the feedback we received from two enthusiastic field hockey players from Pennsylvania.
Hi. We are members of the U14 Key State Field Hockey team from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. We were at the 2009 National Indoor Tournaments in Virginia Beach. Our team placed third in one of the pools. We had lots of fun with our team and shopping. While we were there we bought Harrow sticks from you. We used our new Harrow sticks this past weekend at the University of Richmond's Jamboree and are very happy with them. I just wanted to share our fun experience with you. We are looking forward to next year's events.
